Mexico City, Mexico, May 23rd 2012

The student movement denominated “Yo soy 132” (I am 132) went out to the streets of Mexico City and other main Mexican cities  on Wednesday to protest on the current situation of the country and demanding a democratization and openness of the mass media, which they consider that their news coverage isn't reliable and they handle themselves according to their own political agenda.

The following is the declaration and list of demands that students read during the mass rally.

I am 132 movement: Declaration and list of demands

The current situation of Mexico demands that we young people take actions in our own hands; it's time to fight for a change in our country; it is time to fight for a freer, more prosperous and fairer Mexico.

We want the current situation of misery, inequality, poverty and violence to be resolved.

Young people in Mexico believe that the political and economic system does not respond to the demands of all Mexicans.

Students united in this country believe that a necessary condition to correct this situation is to empower the citizen through information, as it allows us to make a better political, economical and social decisions. Information allows citizens to demand and  make substantiated critiques towards their government, policy makers, employers and society itself. Therefore, "I am 132" makes the right to information and the right to freedom of expression their main demands.

Today young people in Mexico have lit a light in the public life of the country. Assume this historic moment with courage and integrity. We should not wait any longer and remain quiet,  the youth says we are  present!

For the national and international media, to the State authorities, Mexican society in general, the movement "I am 132", states: First, we are a nonpartisan movement and formed by citizens, therefore we  do not express any support or opposition to any political candidate.

Our desires and demands focus on the defense of freedom of expression and the right of Mexicans to be informed.

Our concern stems from the current state of the national press and media, and their political role in the democratic context.

Second, "I am 132", does not represent any public institution of higher education or private, their representation depends only on the individuals who join this cause, being that is coordinated by university committees.

Third, the movement "I am 132" through democratic deliberation between universities, already has general principles that guide their causes and laws that ensure the participation of individuals and groups that make them yours.

In essence, our movement seeks the democratization of the media in order to ensure transparence, pluralism and impartiality to promote awareness and critical thinking.

That's why we demand a real competition in the media market, particularly regarding to the television duopoly.

We demand Internet access to an effective constitutional right under the terms established in Article 1 of our Constitution.

We demand the installation in all media radio, television and print media, a third party individuals to defend the public interest, such as the publication of a Code of Ethics of information management and the establishment of an ombudsman.

We demand to submit to contest productions for public television licensees to the different schools of media communication.

We demand an open debate among young people and the media about the claims herein.

We also require ensuring the safety of all members of this movement, those who express themselves freely in the country and particularly those journalists who have been touched by violence.

Furthermore we express our full solidarity with those  that have been repressed in the past days, for freely expressing their ideas in different Mexican states.

As an immediate request, we demand a “national chain” broadcast of the debate of the candidates running for the presidency. We  do not find in this as an imposition to privileged audiences, but in order to guarantee the right to choose to see or not those who currently do not have this possibility.

Collage students, youth and citizens of Mexico, this movement are called upon to organize, join and endorse this list of demands.

For a true democracy, "I am 132".
