"[...]it must not be any surprise that government officials and police authorities has some sort of links or give protection to criminal gangs, especially drug cartels, due to the large amount of money they offer or simply threaten the lives of these..."

The surprise raid that the Federal Police and Mexican Army did in the State of Michoacán where they detained 10 mayors , 17 state government officials and a judge for allegedly having links to the drug cartel “La Familia”, this seems to be one of the biggest hit of president Calderon’s administration in the fight against the drug cartels, launched on December of 2006, precisely in this state.
The General Attorney Office informed in a news conference, that the raid was the result of an investigation that began six months ago, which combined police investigation capacity and ministerial, that determined that detainees were allegedly part of a protection network to ‘La familia’.
The action taken by federal government bother the left wing governor of Michoacan, Leonel Godoy, which argued that he wasn’t informed of this police raid and he assured that he has been working closely with President Calderon’s administration on this fight.
In the other hand, the governor's party, Democratic Revolution Party (PRD) gave their support and they hope this is not a selective strategy to fight the drug trafficking and they classified this action “as hostile” by the federal government for not notifying the governor.
Certainly something like this has never been seen in Mexico, but it must not be any surprise that government officials and police authorities has some sort of links or give protection to criminal gangs, especially drug cartels, due to the large amount of money they offer or simply threaten the lives of these; so mainly the motto of the organized crime would be ‘Mess with us and we will mess with your life’.
This type of impressive actions against the drug cartels don’t really impress me, mainly because is well known that high rank officials of the federal government, especially the one in charge of conducting the so call war against the organized crime, has allegedly links with drug cartels as well, and as I been saying in the past few months, this war hasn’t been fought sincerely and it hasn’t given any results. The only way I could trust this war is that president Calderon will remove his main man in charge of leading these failure war.
